Resumo: This study seeks to discuss false memories in the recognition of people from the perspective of breaking the chain of custody. The research problem asks: by what factors do false memories cause the chain of custody to be broken in the person recognition test? The aim is to answer the research question based on the general objective: to discuss why false memories cause the chain of custody to be broken in the person recognition test, which is intertwined with the following specific objectives: to map the recognition of people as evidence in Brazilian criminal proceedings and the impacts on its application; highlight the factors of race and time as causes of false memories in recognizing people; analyze the impact of false memories on recognizing people in the chain of custody; check the quality control of the test by recognizing people. The methodology used follows an analytical-critical line, based on a bibliographical review. As for the choice of method for this research, it is based on a qualitative approach, entering into an analysis with a theoretical focus.
