Resumo: The present study addresses an analytical look at the creative work of American director Terrence Malick, the modes of materialization of his technical-stylistic resources (photography, sound, assembly of plans, among other characteristics) that provide meanings beyond the semantic content of cinematography. As a particular way of constructing a film, we think about the way these features configure the characters and their actions, observing in how the dramaturgy is thought through the available bibliography, in order to problematize what are the possible potencies implied in the creation of a proper style of dramaturgy in contemporary American cinema. From the point of view of the observer, we seek to promote meanings that emerge from the interaction between image and sound, questioning in what measure this relation is capable of articulating a unity through the discursive fragmentation present in the work The Tree of Life, (2011), our main object of study. In this film, the narrative does not seem to contain a factual, but rather discontinuous, order of presenting itself in a way that can be understood as fragmented. Such a contingent feature transgresses the classical structuring of dramaturgy and opens space for a certain similarity to the surrealist universe.
