Resumo: The COVID-19 pandemic has directly affected the internationalization of education worldwide. Internationalization with physical mobility, considered the main element in debates on the subject, was severely affected by the closing of borders between countries, making it impossible for face-to-face exchanges to take place. Added to this is the history of the low number of students who manage to participate in an exchange with physical mobility during basic education. Thus, the possibility emerges of promoting a type of internationalization of education that does not require physical displacement between countries, internationalization at home, with virtual exchange being part of this modality and the focus of this research. The objective is, therefore, to set up a virtual exchange experience in Brazilian basic education and its equivalents abroad, with the aim of proposing a program for Brazilian schools at this level of education. Therefore, as a methodological approach, this research uses a qualitative approach and Design-Based Research to achieve the proposed objectives. The data production instruments were participant observation, class diaries and an online questionnaire. As a result, a virtual exchange experience was obtained between a Brazilian confessional private school of basic education and a Chilean confessional private school of equivalent level of education.
