Resumo: This study considered the important role played by the military criminal system in the field of public safety, and that solutions might be found in it, such as helping with the formulation of public policies on violence and criminality control amongst police officers and military firefighters. The objective was to elaborate the social representations of punishment applied to military police officers and firefighters of the Military Fire Brigade of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, who committed criminal misconduct, active corruption, passive corruption, peculation, and peculation-theft, between the years 2015 and 2018. The method applied was qualitative and it consisted of a case study. The study is empirical and inductive, for the social representations were elaborated through the analyses of judgments delivered by the Military Court of Rio Grande do Sul, and also via empirical data obtained from interviews with those magistrates. One applied Social Representations theory as the analysis methodology. The social representations of punishment showed the existence of a positive general prevention function of punishment in the researched field. One concluded that punishment is a multidimensional and plural social phenomenon, in other words, it is a complex cultural phenomenon.
