Resumo: Crime has been a major adversity in modern societies. In Brazil, it has been rising in the last decades and negatively impacting the quality of life of people, which can cause property losses, emotional and psychological damages, loss of human life, as well as other direct and indirect costs with public health, private security, legal system crime, reduction in tourism, and therefore a decrease in the country's productivity. Criminality in Brazil is the central plot of this dissertation, which consists of two essays. Both seek to analyze the relationship between socioeconomic characteristics and crime, using space econometrics to better expose these links. The first essay performs an analysis of homicides in the 558 Brazilian micro-regions, and their associated factors for eleven years, between 2007 and 2017, using spatial analysis with panel data. Through the results found, it is concluded that there is spatial dependence between the observed variables and, therefore, spatial homicide clusters among Brazilian micro-regions. The second, aims to explore the relationship of crime in the 496 municipalities of Rio Grande do Sul, through a cross-section regression for 2015, mainly emphasizing the impact of state public investments in education in reducing crime. The results obtained allow us to affirm that an increase in public investments in education tends to reduce crime in the municipalities
