Resumo: |
The printed image of botanical books from the 19th century is analyzed in this work with emphasis on the image shape and color. The influences received by botanical artists during their training are considered from historical point of view of botany. Technical and scientific solutions as well as limitations to the image reproduction are taken into account. This analysis is based on works published throughout the 19th century including the following categories: textbook, atlas, dictionary, anthology and travel book. The theoretical analysis methodology employed in this work follows the criteria adopted by the History of Science: epistemology, context and historiography. With the technique applied to image reproduction as the starting point, it is shown by comparative analysis how the botanical image in printed books of the 19th century resembles the images found in illuminated manuscripts. To understand this relationship, the study of the most frequently used processes going from black-and-white to color reproduction has been done. The analysis presented in this work discusses and emphasizes the importance of the image as document for transmission of knowledge about nature, the arts and the History of Science |
