Resumo: This thesis theme is the construction of conceptual metaphors in Bráulio Bessa's cordels. The choice is justified by the scrutiny in studies related to cordel literature. The established hypothesis is the recurrence of a kind of metaphorical concept. Research questions that guide this study are: 1) What types of conceptual metaphors are present in cordel literature? 2) How are conceptual metaphors constructed in Bráulio Bessa's cordels? In order to answer to these questions, the general objective is to understand the construction of metaphorical concepts in Bráulio Bessa's cordel literature, and as specific objectives: 1) Identify the conceptual metaphors in the selected cordels; 2) Verify what types of concepts are present in texts and their recurrence. Aiming at achieving the proposed objectives, the research is based, above all, on studies by Ferreira (2015), Mateus (2012) and Mosca (2004), on figures of speech; by Todorov (2014) and Mendes (2010), on the historical perspective of the figures; by Martins (2012), Palma and Zanotto (2014), Dubois et al. (1970), Reboul (2000), Henriques (2011) and Garcia (2010), on Stylistics; Lakoff and Johnson (2002), on the cognitive approach to metaphor, and by Loue (2013) and Siman (2018), on the relationship between cognitive metaphors and motivation, emotion, behavior and culture. The corpus is composed of two publications authored by Bráulio Bessa, the cordels “Recomeçar” and “A vida é uma corrida”, first published in the author’s anthology and, later, adapted for social networks in the format of video cordels. Obtained results reveal that there is a predominant type of metaphorical concept in each analyzed cordel, which leads to a specific meaning, in addition to indicating the relevance of understanding the experiential domains linked to the nature of the body, the environment and culture
