Resumo: |
Due to the evolution of telecommunications, the interest of governmental and private organizations on using telework has increased. As a work arrangement, telework is approximately four decades old. Nonetheless, telework formally entered the legal system in Brazil and in other countries less than a decade ago as a way to reduce companies’ costs, increase employees’ quality of life, and protect the environment. Through the systemic theoretical framework and the qualitative methodology, this paper investigated, in three Brazilian cities: São Paulo and Juqueí, in the State of São Paulo), and Porto Alegre, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, by semistructured interviews, twelve participants who work from a home office. The investigation took two major systems into account – family and formal organization (the employer). The aim was to study the possible effects of telework in an employee’s personal and professional life, the new family dynamics resulting from taking work into the home environment, if teleworking brought advantages or disadvantages to the participants, and what resources were used by the families to adjust to the new work arrangement. The choice of participants was based on teleworkers who had been employed for, at least, six months. By analyzing the content described, what was noted were changes in family dynamics, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of teleworking to each participant – some aspects were considered an advantage by one participant and a disadvantage by another. Therefore, this paper’s conclusion is that telework is a work arrangement that may favor the balance between an employee’s personal and professional life in some situations, as long as the employee has self-control as a personal trait |
