Resumo: The aim of this work is to reflect on the vicissitudes in the process of implementing the Sociology component in Senior High School in São Paulo State's public educational network, especially the difficulties encountered in everyday school life when the subject was reintroduced and within the context of the educational reform program known as "São Paulo faz Escola". Documents and recent publications on the subject were analyzed. Field research was carried out, involving state school Sociology teachers and an interview was conducted with Dr. Heloisa Helena Teixeira de Souza Martins, who coordinated the elaboration of the Sociology curriculum, on behalf of Sociedade Brasileira de Sociologia - SBS (Brazilian Sociological Society). Data collected in semi-structured interviews were analyzed using content analysis procedures, focusing on the following categories: the conditions of students in Senior High School and the conditions of teachers in state schools in São Paulo. The problems identified include the high rate of teachers employed on a temporary basis and the large contingent of Sociology teachers without specific qualifications in the area
