This work presents an analysis of “A máquina de fazer espanhóis”, a novel by Valter Hugo Mãe. From within the field of Social Gerontology, the author mobilizes concepts from Friedrich Nietzsche, Michel Foucault, Gonçalo M. Tavares, Fernando Pessoa, Silvana Tótora and Angela Mucida to build a vision of the diversity of agings and ways of experiencing longliving. The possibility of positive encounters and affects in old age, the potential of this lifestage, institucionalization, creative novelization and finitude are discussed in light of these thinkers. The literary work as object of study alows for a perspective enriching and pertaing to the emerging field of Social Gerontology
