Resumo: |
This work was built on the interfaces between old age, as a condition, family as a social institution, and institutions Long Term (LTCFs), locus of existence of many elderly today. The changes in the family dynamics life have contributed to the institutionalization of the elderly. Beside the aging population, changes in family structures and sometimes the absence of the family, has imposed increasingly, the need for institutionalization of the elderly. Unfortunately, there is little that is known about the profile of the institutionalized elderly. The main objective of this work was to raise the social profile, demographic and health of elderly residents in LTCFs of the North Health District, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Of the five existing LTCFs in this District, four manifested themselves favorably to the research. The only one that did not respond to the request was only because of the renovation on the physical area. We started from the assumption that knowing the reality of the institutions and the profile of the institutionalized elderly is crucial for any programs focused both on improving the quality of life for themselves, as in the definition / implementation of policies - public and social - that aim to give quality life for those who are living in LTCFs. The study was cross-sectional, descriptive and observational, using a quantitative approach and analysis by SPSS. To collect the data we applied a semi-structured questionnaire preceded the use of validated instruments about the cognitive status of the elderly. Forty-seven elderly were interviewed. Results of the study revealed that most of the institutionalized elderly are women, single people, childless, supporters of Catholicism and with little or no education; receive retirement pension and said enjoy leisure activities. The ages vary between 64 and 91 years. The minority doesn t receive visits from family and / or friends. The difference in the time permanence in the institution is significant. With regard to the epidemiological profile, the hypertension is the disease in mostly elderly patients, followed musculoskeletal system diseases and other chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, there are proportionately few seniors that don t rely on a caregiver to perform daily activities. Information obtained through research provide important information for planning the actions to be taken by LTCFs along with the elderly |
