This thesis proposes a new reading of the Chinese body practice taijí quán known outside of Asia as taichi chuan. Starting from a few historical clues that go back to an uncertain emergence and to a past strongly related to relations of power and political projects, we investigate how hegemonic discourses about the practice are constructed – and how it is possible to challenge it. They are: the holistic health discourse; the martial art, related to a tradition of lineages that promptly originated the technique; and that of spirituality, which adheres to a global mystical market (ARJANA, 2020). Highly impregnated by orientalism (SAID, 2018), these discourses imprison taijí quán in an identity and capitalist perspective that distances it from the practitioner's unique experience. By questioning these narratives, we seek to understand the conception of the body that guides this practice, presenting a perspective with very few studies of how the Chinese see and feel the body through images. The idea is to analyze how such images, metaphors and poetic texts operates another way of knowing and experiencing the body and life from a sensitive epistemology. The theoretical framework is based on the Bodymedia Theory (KATZ; GREINER, 2006) and studies on orientalism and Chinese medicine, among other topics related to this thesis, bringing together authors such as Said (2018), Arjana (2020), Wile (1996), Shahar (2011), Kuriyama (1999) and Yuasa (1997). In addition to the bibliographic research, we take off from an empirical experience of more than a decade training and teaching taijí quán. The main hypothesis is that, over time, taijí quán constituted itself as a practical method that reorganizes the conceptions of body, world (nature) and life, building a sensitive epistemology of experience. As such, it has triggered an approach to knowledge beyond the dichotomies West/East, body/mind, theory/practice and nature/culture |
