Resumo: |
The dissertation adresses the relationship between youngsters who live in the Nova Jaguaré slum, located in the Jaguaré district, in the city of São Paulo’s West side, and the nongovernamental organisation called Instituto Reciclar, located in the same region. The research revealed that the Intituto Reciclar acts as a relevant mediator for the youngsters who live in the slums to overcome the stigma, for, as they are recruted to integrate the production line, it gives them a guarantee that they are ready to be seen with respect by the wealthy residents of the district, which see them as inferior and unworthy individuals. This stigma encourages the youngsters to look for a job in the non-governamental organisation, because they believe they won’t have good work and social ascent opportunities without the endorsement that it promotes. The methodology used to achieve this dissertation was the ethnographic research, according to Clifford Geertz thick description, in the organisation’s head office with interviews made with the youngsters that work for it and with the NGO’s employees. The stigma analysis was based in the studies of Erving Goffman. It can be concluded that the NGO reaches its objective, just as most of the youngsters who finish their work time of around 3 years, since they are hired by private companies or start their academic studies in universities |
