The document presents a study about the matter of poverty, pointing out its ties with the capitalist society and the different approaches it takes on towards the Brazilian social policies. In this study, historical aspects of the Social Work Service are also dealt with, as well as some progress achieved and new perspectives outlined from the SUAS (Social Work Sole System); it is further complemented by the analysis of results of a research carried out with Social Work professionals who act at public institutions in some São Paulo State municipalities. From the results obtained in the research - that denote the existence of a conservative culture backing the discourses and interventions of people interviewed -, it is proposed that reflexions be made with regard to the ethical-political project on the Social Worker profession and, also, that actions be implemented so as to assure a longer reach of social policies, in harmony with the emancipative principles and values guiding it
