Resumo: This thesis aims to analyze the processing and organization about the work from the social workers with families, based on their conceptions and professional actions, in research institutes in Social Assistance Reference Centers (CRAS), in the State of São Paulo. It was characterized the work with families as part of the work process developed at CRAS and as a strategy for continued social intervention of a socio-educational nature. The investigation was guided by theoretical-methodological assumptions with a critical-dialectical basis. It was realized a bibliographic review with the purpose of theoretically subsidizing reflections and analysis of the field research, which had semi-structured face-to-face characteristics with social workers from the metropolis of São Paulo and a city in São Paulo state, which it was not going to be identified. So, systematic work groups with families and analysis of work plans were evaluated. In order to expand the scope of the investigation, an online questionnaire was disseminated in the state of São Paulo. The constructed sample corresponds to 51 (fifty-one) social workers in its 26 (twenty-six) cities where it operates, contemplating regional diversity in different cultural, political and economic scenarios. The analyzes undertaken made it possible to verify the dismantling of what was once projected as offering social protection to families via the Social Assistance policy. The work with families operationalized by the surveyed CRAS stops to offer due social protection, since protections cannot be treated only with state monetary benefits, with focused and discontinued actions. In addition to that, the absence of conditions and political measures for its materialization by the municipal administrations, expressed as institutional power that imposes tensions on the salaried work of social workers, especially when they pre-determine the work activities based on management and traditionalism, and when it stops investing in human resources and essential materials. This political-structural basis corroborates deficient activities in planning, objectives and intentions, distancing itself from the procedural and continuous character required in working with families. It predominates the collective forms by means of groups divided by age groups, followed by individual ones, with assistance, in addition to accompaniments and welcoming meetings. In these ones, conservative conceptions that intend the social direction of the profession coexist with expressions of critical reflection demonstrate the plurality of experiences present in these contradictory socio-occupational spaces
