This research has as its aim studying the work produced by poet, translator, critic, and essayist Ana Cristina Cesar (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) in her annotated translation of the short story “Bliss”. Thus, we are analysing the “finished” translation of the story, written by New Zealander Katherine Mansfield, as well as the notes and records referring to the translation process, all elaborated by Ana C.. Our observations are made through the critical lens of the creative process, a line of reasoning which allows us to see translation as a creative and, therefore, continuous act; a production driven by a combination of poetic projects — that of the author who “initiates” the literary text, and that of the translator who resumes it and extends its life. Furthermore, this study bases itself on the idea of translation as a specific type of rewriting, comparable to the image of a palimpsest; a recreation based on the foundations of a specific and previously presented project, often called “the original text”. With the application of these theoretical principles to our object of research analysis, we hope to not only confirm our conjecture regarding the combination of poetic projects in translation, but also observe more attentively what guides Ana Cristina Cesar's translation process |
