Resumo: Interviewing high school students in a public school of São Paulo, we could verify the meanings these students attribute to Elementary and High School. All students of a São Paulo public High School Third Year were interviewed and Education Official documents were analysed. Official legislation says that High School must prepare students for University and future entry into the labor market. At the vocational course, in turn, is given the specific task of preparing for labor market. Finding a job appears as one of the concerns of these young people finishing high school and those students, recognizing the precarious education received at school, seek other places for training. Considering the apparent lack of articulation between official legislation and the current reality, the students see in work and in other educational spaces, the possibility to supplement the education received at school and opportunities to obtain professional qualifications to provide access to the labor market
