Resumo: | This master's research integrates in the research line History, Society, Culture and Education Policy of the Postgraduate Program in Education, at the Federal University of Espirito Santo and developed within the Center for Studies and Research in Educational Policy. The overall objective is to investigate the process of socialization in the school for kids enrolled in high school in a state school of the Espirito Santo. The guiding hypothesis of this study is that for young people, high school is an opportunity for social mobility because it could lead to work and/or a higher education. At the same time, this mandatory step is experienced as a merely bureaucratic experience with little implication in the educational process of youngters as ethical and political subjects. The methodological strategy adopted is the case study at the State Elementary and High School Clovis Borges Miguel in the municipality of Serra. The choice for this institution is justified because it is a traditional school in the state, with significant importance in the state and recognized as having an efficient network management. It was used the following methodological procedures: participant observation, questionnaires, semi-structured interview and conversation circles. This study was supported by a theoretical approach inspired by the sociology of experience, designed by the sociologist François Dubet. The main results indicate that for most of the subjects participating in the research the school is not a purely instrumental function of preparation for the labor market or higher education. One of the functions that they attribute to the institution is sociability function, so the school is also a meeting place with friends. The data show that young people establish meaningful relationships with teachers that impact positively in the learning process. Moreover, for them, the school has the role of providing a humanistic, critical and civil formation. The initial hypothesis of this study is not confirmed in its entirety, since the perception of young students is that the school is not only an opportunity for social mobility, in addition it enables high school experiences that impact positively the formation process of these subjects |
