Resumo: |
This research dealt with the analysis of cultural engagement social role of Maria Júlia do Nascimento, mostly known as Dona Santa, who lived from 1877 to 1962 in Recife, Pernambuco. Famous and respected ialorixá in Ponto de Parada, memories keeper, president and queen of maracatuElefante, the most ancient nation (nation-style) in Recife, Dona Santa gained great relevance in Recife of XX and XXI centuries. Dona Santa‟s activities, between 1950 and 1960 decades, established social changes which were assumed by the women inside the maracatus. From articles issued in JornalDiário de Pernambuco (Pernambuco Daily News), Katarina Real‟s photos, and interviews taken from current presidents of maracatusnações, it was possible to realize that the representations about Dona Santa revealed a queen who knew how to build its place during the diversified discussions by which Recife Afro-Brazilian culture passed, among legitimations that would be listed as traditional and regional ones. Her memory is cultivated, kept and (re) elaborated in Pernambuco as one of the most important queens of maracatunação |
