Resumo: This research study, part of Project DIRECT Towards the language of business communication (LAEL-PUC/SP), aims to identify the views of six school managers regarding the use of new technologies, mainly the computer, in the school s daily life, and to investigate how they see their role in this context. To achieve this, the present work is theoretically supported by Functional Grammar (Halliday, 1994), focusing on the ideational metafunction in order to analyze the linguistic representation of the reality built by the managers. None of the various research studies that deal with school management has approached the managers views in light of the Functional Grammar, as proposed here. Thus, this work gives a contribution to the study of this discourse, using as its corpus a questionnaire answered by the school managers in order to analyze the discourse produced by them. The results are presented and discussed so as to identify the views of the school managers who participated in the research about the use of new technologies in the school s daily life and to investigate how the managers see their role in the use of the new technologies in school. The results indicated that they are convinced of the importance of the new technologies in school, although they refer to the technology, mainly the computer, as an instrument centered on data transmission, or as a need, something to be brought to school due to the need to keep up with the modern world. This work intends to have contributed to language studies in light of the Functional Grammar, by showing, through the speakers linguistic choices, that it is possible to analyze the views that are built about certain facts that surround us. Thus, it presents an original contribution to Applied Linguistics
