Resumo: This thesis investigates through memory the migration of cearenses, people from Ceará, to the city of São Paulo from 1972 to 2009. The research was mainly done using as object personal collections of the migrants as letters, epistolary manuals, working IDs, and interviews. This kind of investigation is able to reach sociabilities, sensibilities, affectionateness, feelings, and emotions in the displacements considering not only the life paths but also the web of relationships established during the process. Through the paths of memory, comparing and contrasting the sources, it is possible to understand versions of stories with expressions of collective experiences involving, at first sight, the conditions of “becoming immigrant”, and in this sense it is detectable how relationships networks were built between the places where these people come from and São Paulo, the city where they go to. Thus, the setting of a life dynamics in the backlands of Ceará and in the big city as well the cearense people plan their life projects result, in the middle of this process, in a culture of migration. In a second moment, feelings of absence and expressions of nostalgia call attention potencializing, by the study of the commom people’s letters, a story of emotions that deals with affections like the ones related to love, friendship, guilty, sorrow, hate, resentment, and grudge. In the third moment, the gender paths as the female protagonism in displacement are studied, observing their origins in the country side, religious orientation and the set of values and rules taught in the family regarding the social positions adopted by its members, considering even the ideas of masculinity e femininity forged in everyday actions. At last, the contraditions and the racialization of northeastern immigrants in São Paulo were discussed, problematizing a past time that made itself present because of an eugenic system of thought recomposed in our everyday life as an enhacer of the tensions the displaced cearense people faced. Treating memory from a cultural perspective and using writings of commom people as object, experiences of migrants from the backlands of Ceará are analysed as a kind of “values in movement” acessed by the means of traces left behind on the road of life, revealing subjecttivity and affectionateness lived in a migration
