This research analyzes the historical processes that made possible the formation in the center of the city of São Paulo of a region of the low meretrício that would be known as “Boca do Lixo” from years 50, at which time the image of the city was exalted as the greater symbol of modernity and progress of the country. The apparent contradiction points to the existence of plots of society that were not part of the economic and social achievements of the glamorous golden years of São Paulo, which resorted to different means of survival, even though considered illicit. They are prostitutes and malandros of all kinds who have constituted a territory that concerns us not only about crime in the city but also with the very sociability and bohemian of an era
