This research proposes to investigate and record the histories, traditions and memories related to the production process of cornmeal in the communities of the Upper Valley Jequitinhonha in the state of Minas Gerais. Corn planting, harvesting and manufacture of cornmeal in stone mills until its striking presence food, we investigated the networks of cultural, environmental, social and economic manifest in everyday life and memory of these communities from their origin in the brazilian colonial history . In this cultural historic process, it emphasizes the strong presence of the heritage of black culture, language, agriculture and cuisine, cultural expressions that are part of what we call as Vissungo Culture (Cultura Vissunga). Through analysis of historical sources, audiovisual records, testimony from farmers, millers and cooks, we discuss the history of the relations of production in the cornmeal Diamantina region from the perspective of material culture, developed by British Cultural Studies. We also rely with the contribution of Brazilian intellectuals, as Oswald de Andrade, Antonio Candido, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, among others, to undestand the complexity of cultural relations in the region |
