Resumo: | This dissertation addresses Axel Honneth´s effort to reconceptualize Hegel‟s concept of ethical life (Sittlichkeit) drawing on the notion of communicative spheres of recognition. It focuses on the theoretical underpinnings of Hegel and Honneth‟s contributions with a view to characterize current conceptualizations of ethical life. The argument is developed in three parts. Initially the discussion focuses on the building blocs of Hegel‟s original idea regarding the link between ethical life and recognition. The second part of the dissertation presents a critical review of current critiques of the problems in Hegel‟s approach with the purpose of examining the plausibility of exploring the concept of ethical life on the basis of the Hegelian concept of spirit and the speculative treatment of recognition. The third part of the dissertation examines Honneth‟s reconstruction of Hegel. Firstly, the discuss model‟s concept of ethical life as explicated in The struggle for Recognition (Kampf um Anerkennung). The dissertation claims that by proposing a Moral grammar of social conflicts, Honneth‟s theory provides a consistent connection between Hegel‟s original conceptualization and a more sound basis provided by empirical inflections within the context of the adaptation of Hegel to the exigencies of post-metaphysical thought. The analysis goes on to present the consolidation of Honneth‟s drawing on Hegel‟s Philosophy of Right, with a view to recast conceptually the notion of spheres of ethical life. By engaging in a discussion of Honneth, this analysis aims at revisiting Hegel and pointing to possible new avenues for a richer understanding of his fundamental ideas. |
