Resumo: | The literature on slavery has proved that slavery was not the same in Brazil. It is necessary to study the master / slave relations in different areas in their specific contexts. This paper aims to study the region of Alegrete, more specifically in the way, there, if freed the slave. The economy in Alegrete in the nineteenth century was focused primarily on livestock. In this study we found 704 letters of manumission granted in the period between 1832 and 1886. In order to understand the daily arrangements that led to these manumissions involving masters and slaves, divided for the purposes of this analysis documents in three series: manumission conditional, manumission paid and unconditional. The most important focus is the letters of liberty for a legal reference was the Law of November 7, 1831 which gave the slaves the legal backing to seek their freedom. |
