Resumo: | The development of representation systems was necessary to the evolution of the mathematical thinking and the communication between the teacher and the student depends very frequently on the understanding of the symbols used. The difficulties in the use of the mathematical symbols and also in the manipulation of the representation registers have been causing problems in the learning of several contents. In some of them, as Group Theory, Intervals and Functions many symbols are used. The representation registers, as well as the simbology involved in those contents were presented and had been worked since Elementary School but they are still a source of uncertainties. This research had the purpose of understanding the reasons of the difficulties the high school students have in learning and also in using the Mathematical simbology in order to help the communication between the students and the teachers.It is also necessary to point out that the understanding of that simbology and the traffic among the different representation registers can improve the student acting in Mathematics as a consequence of the easiness of the written communication he can reach. This research was performed through observations inside the classroom, through the application of a test and also through interviews with high school students who go to a public school. As the result, the difficulties the students had in the use of the simbology and in the traffic among the representation registers are pointed, and possible causes for the problems are discussed. |
