Resumo: This paper presents a study on the possible reasons for the difficulties presented by students from 7 th grade of elementary school in the study of algebraic concepts and procedures. Observations were performed in the classroom, application of testing with students and interviews with students and teachers. These instruments were prepared to try to detect the causes of the difficulties that are perceived. The study involved a class of 7 th number of a school's private network of education in Porto Alegre, and the sample was composed of 32 students. Through this study, whose analysis was performed on a highly qualitative seeks to understand the difficulties and seek alternative able to provide a better understanding of learning algebra. See that the interpretation of algebraic problems, which require a translation of the current language to language barriers have symbolic as well as the relationship between algebra and arithmetic. These were the main factors found in this search.
