Resumo: This study speculates the causes of errors in mathematics. An investigation was undertaken of the relationship of error not only with the language used in mathematics but also with the students’ mother tongue. Factors related to mechanical and out-of-context learning were also taken into consideration as potential sources of errors. Significant learning is proposed as an alternative to minimize the problem. The study was put into effect through an instrument projected specifically with the means of trying to identify the potential causes of errors made by junior and senior high school students. Public and private schools participated in the study. Furthermore, in the public school system, both state and municipal schools were included. The sample was composed of 150 randomly selected students of both genders, who studied either in the morning, afternoon or evening in the capital or the countryside.
