This dissertation provides an exam on the relation between local industrial structure and relative growth performance, attempting to identify the existence, the nature, and the extent of local externalities. The geographic dimension is based on 24 Coredes region units of Rio Grande do Sul state. The study uses a dataset mainly from Relação Anual de Informações Sociais (RAIS), which includes employment level information of nine industrial sectors, between 1995 and 2005. Regressions are computed on each sector separately. Local employment growth by sector is regressed on five explanatory variables corresponding to specialization, diversity, competition, average size of plants, and total employment density. The study makes use of static panel data, with fixed effects methodology, allowing capturing the time invariant regional differences. The results show that the local economic structure significantly affects local employment growth, but in different ways across sectors.
