This dissertation aims to analyze the evolution of indicators of sustainable development and observe the pattern of development of Rio Grande do Sul in the period 1997 to 2005, using an indicator selected. Thus, based on literature search, was a review of the concepts of economic growth, development and sustainable development, seeking to emphasize the importance of the methodologies for measuring and describing the main indicators. Following is studied the pattern of development and sustainability of Rio Grande do Sul, between 1997 and 2005 with the implementation of the Dashboard of Sustainability indicator. As a result the study shows a trend of improvement in the indicator of sustainability over time, similar to the behavior of 'traditional' indicators. But when analyzed in a sector, the indicator shows in particular that showed disparities in the development of the state, raising the need to observe the "new" methodologies for indicators.
