The so-called ‘ontological argument’ put forward by Anselm in his Proslogion is seen in the light of a new characterization presented by Ruth Marcus. In this reading the argument is shown to be irreducibly epistemic in nature and its structure is then investigated. It is argued that the ontological argument can be interpreted as a valid ad hominem argument against the Fool, who is charged by Anselm with the accusation of failing to see the consequences of his compliance with the claim that there is, in his understanding, an object satisfying the indefinite description aliquid quo nihil maius cogitari possit, thus falling into a certain kind of pragmatic contradiction.
