Resumo: The purpose of the present work is to understand the cyclicity in cartoon stories in the light of symbolic imagination, which builds up plots that contemplate dualism and the hero character, such as in Donald Duck, by Walt Disney, and SpongeBob SquarePants, by Nickelodeon. As basic requirement for this analysis, we understand that the research subjects present the symbolic “diagnosed” by Gilbert Durand’ work Anthropological structures of the imaginary. The main assumption of this research refers to the cyclicity present in cartoons in different historical moments, and therefore it is divided into three different parts. The first part addresses the history of cartoons in order to comprehend the historical and cultural context of the time when the before-mentioned cartoons were created. The second part is dedicated to theoretical aspects that guide this work and establish what we understand for cyclicity and imaginary. And the third and last part focuses on the analysis of four episodes, in order to determine the relationship between the pre-established symbolic and cartoon stories. In this work, film narrative is understood as the articulation between its content and expressive components, as well as the story builder, providing the reason for its existence, according to Francis Vanoye and Gérard Genette. This is the perspective that provided the support for the film analysis, and which has shown that the assumed cyclicity was far from the pre-established parameters, but close to the moral relationship with the social aspects found throughout different phases of human history.
