Resumo: | This paper intends to analyze the figurations of women in Cornélio Penna’s three first novels - Fronteira (1935), Dois romances de Nico Horta (1939) e Repouso (1948). Having this in mind, the research begins by verifying in what manner subjectivity was assimilated by the Western novels. As a result of new narrative techniques, such as inner monologue and flow of consciousness, the Romanesque prose formulates the representation of masculine consciousness in modern society. In Brazil, during the 1930s, the group of catholic authors, working on introspection narratives, starts dedicating a definite space for the representation of femininity. As a part of this literary system, Cornélio Penna’s works represent the situation of women within the Brazilian patriarchal family. Thus, on the one hand, the analysis will focus on the spatiality of home and the culture of Minas Gerais, constitutive of feminine subjectivity, but on the other hand, it will consider the roles taken by women within the family circle, and their subjection to the power of the pater familias. |
