Resumo: | The present paper studies the narratives of O Rei de Havana and O ninho da serpente by Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, through the ideology theory, developed by John B. Thompson. By the same token, the relations between culture and society will be discussed under the perspective of the consequences of reading in discretionary political systems, as well as the prohibition of these texts by Gutiérrez in Cuba. Literature will be studied as a way to contest the attempts to settle and maintain power in society. Thus, the course of the protagonists within these narratives will show the tension between submission under an authoritarian system, with its multiple strategies of transfiguration; and the search for alternatives to escape from this imposing coercion. This paper intends to link literature to the present time, for the purpose of discussing the writer´s social commitment with their time and the function of art in times of crisis. |
