Resumo: Idiophathic pulmonar fibrosis (IPF) is the most common of interstitial diseases, being a chronic, progressive fibrotic lung disease od unknown cause. Endothelial dysfunction is an early and potentially reversible precursor to vascular disease. Monitoring endothelial function can be valuable for risk stratification and identification or future cardiovascular pathologies and disease progression. The aim of the study was to evaluate the correlation od endothelial function with functional capacity, in addition to evaluate the acute effect of a single aerobic training session on the endothelial function of IPF patients. Twenty five subjects (12 women and 13 men) were included in this observational and cross-sectional clinical study. Endothelial function was assessed by ultrasonography and flow mediated dilatation (FMD) technique in absolute (mm) and percentage (%) values. Functional capacity was assessed by Incremental Shuttle Walking Test (ISWT). Patients performed a 30-minute aerobic training session (with 5 minutes of warm-up and 5 minutes the cool-down) on a treadmill, with intensity of 60 a 80% of the heart rate reached on CPT. A significant negative correlation was found between functional capacity and flow mediated dilatation; Pearson’s correlation coefficient was – 0.66 (p = 0.01). the acute effect of exercise was significant on peak diameter of brachial artery (4.85 ± 1.24, pre and 5.98 ± 1.58, post, with p = 0.03). we conclude that functional capacity is associated with endothelial function and a single aerobic training session provide a significant change in endothelial function in IPF patients.
