Resumo: This is a theoretical research of philosophical-educational nature, through a bibliographical review which main object is the meaning and role of reading in the process of learning in higher education. Based on the observation that, despite the didactic-pedagogical initiatives that aim the encouragement and qualification of the reading practice at this level of education, its influence on the integral formation of university students remains precarious. Based on empirical diagnoses registered in carried out researches and on theoretical studies on the subject, the paper proposes to reveal that reading, duly understood and practiced in the academic environment, is indispensable mediation for a meaningful formation of university students. Therefore, after a diagnosis of the reading situation in the national university tradition, we will seek to elicit the contribution of it to the university learning, as well as to advance some strategic subsidies for a pedagogy of the reading in higher education, based on the philosophical references concerning the contribution of reading to human formation, particularly those expressed in the thoughts of Freire, Severino and Kleiman.
