Resumo: Environmental sustainability in society is characterized as a dynamic and emerging scientific field in knowledge generation. Knowledge is interpreted as a social process that needs to be legitimized by society as a whole to be validated and accepted. Thus, the present study has the main objective to analyze the contribution of Stricto Sensu in administration in the legitimating of knowledge in environmental sustainability. The theoretical framework is based on the approach of the sociology of knowledge of Berger and Luckmann (2008) associated with the theories of bibliometric studies and analysis of social networks. The study design fits the category of descriptive research that uses the following techniques: the data mining that is a quantitative and analysis of social networks that is both quantitative and qualitative, characterizing this study how mixed methods research. The research used two data sources. The first is from the project Pro-administration with data from theses and dissertations in graduate programs in business administration in Brazil from 1998 to 2009. The second constitutes the referential utilized in 47 theses and dissertations defended in environmental sustainability Stricto Sensu of period from 2007 to 2009. In the period 1998 to 2009 a total of 295 teachers in Stricto Sensu administration made leading in the area of environmental sustainability. A collaboration of researchers approaches the Lotka's Law, in which the five most prolific researchers are responsible by 15% of all searches leading, while 208 researchers conducted only one orientation on environmental sustainability. The Higher Education Institutions training of researchers approaching Bradford's Law, establishing three important groups of doctors in training graduates who develop leading in the search field. The core consists of the University of São Paulo USP and the Foundation Getúlio Vargas in São Paulo FGV / SP responsible for training 35% of the researchers. Analysis of the structure of collaboration generated from the bonds of participation showed that the social arrangement formed by participants of doctoral and masters stalls set up a social network type two-mode consists of 947 actors with 1284 ties of relationship. These actors are divided into three main social arrangements and the occurrence of some isolated stalls. The analysis of nine theses and 38 dissertations in environmental sustainability in Stricto Sensu in administration revealed a total of 4852 citations, 1360 being devoted to this field of research. Based on the typology of Berger and Luckmann (2008) identified the legitimation of knowledge on environmental sustainability in the work of the following authors working in Stricto Sensu in administration: Jose Carlos Barbieri, Luis Felipe Machado Nascimento, Hans Michael Van Bellen, Jacques Demajorovic and Ícaro Aronovich da Cunha. The analysis model of the process of legitimization and institutionalization of knowledge, proposed by this study, and that incorporates the type of Berger and Luckmann (2008) bibliometrics and social network analysis proved suitable for the purpose it was intended.
