Resumo: This dissertation is consolidated from multiple, integrated and interdependent studies. The dissertation development chapters include three studies accepted for publication in scientific journals and or conference proceedings reviewed by peers. With ways of investigating phenomena arising from social vulnerability present in territories that lack equitable treatment in the urban planning process, the present dissertation project has as its central objective to present a model of organized civil society initiatives that contribute with ways to minimize the framework of social vulnerability, increased quality of life and sustainability in cities. The first study is a research of a theoretical, exploratory, and quantitative nature, addressed in a bibliometric analysis with processing in Software R in 195 documents with interactions in scientific production involving circular economics and social vulnerability. The second study, classified as a case study, in continuity with the first is of an applied, exploratory, and qualitative nature, in a natural environment, which comprised methodological stages of observation, document analysis, interview, and focus group. The third study shows one of the actions of the enterprises studied to reduce social vulnerability. In an experience of social innovation in periurban agriculture in São Paulo, we sought to identify the feasibility of implementing a socio-environmental innovation project promoted by undertakings of recyclable material collectors in a peripheral region of São Paulo, from the perspective of the local community. The connections presented in the theoretical framework and two practical experiences were analyzed, through six categories, in terms of the contribution of studies to the promotion of the sustainable city. The identification of pillars that prevent the transition from the current model to a sustainable city was one of the contributions presented in the work.
