Resumo: |
This dissertation makes an introduction to the archaeological and literary aspects of Moab, a theme lacking publications in Portuguese language. It deals first with the facts related to the discovery of Mesa's inscription in the second half of the 19th century, the diplomatic disputes that caused the destruction of the inscription, as well as the scientific works that, during the following decades, addressed the subject. Following, it presents the main geographical and archaeological features of Moab during the Late Bronze, Ancient Iron and Late Iron Ages, paying special attention to human settlements, but also to the large buildings and sculptures, considered cultural resources necessary for the state. Moabite, patrimonial and segmental, who used domestic metaphors to endorse his hegemony; Moreover, it presents Moab's place in the Assyrian world, and its importance as a trade route. Mesa's stele translation, philological commentary, and analysis of its form and literary genre all point to a text drawn from clear literary tools used to mark the power of the Moabite monarchy. Such archaeological and literary aspects hold that Moab's development took place after the end of Omrid Israel's domination, as well as suggesting a fresh look at the Hebrew Bible. (AU) |
