Resumo: Several studies show the advantages of the presence of authentic leaders in organizations. The present study aims to identify priorities in terms of values that impact on the authenticity of a leader, that is, to investigate what are the priorities in terms of values that influence someone’s performance as an authentic leader. Rather, what are the values - considering the structure proposed by Schwartz (2005) - are related to the expression of the dimensions that are considered to be the characteristics described in the literature as the authentic leader profile. In order to achieve this purpose, a quantitative survey was conducted, and a structured questionnaire applied to 295 respondents from distinct organizations. Data were analyzed from multivariate techniques, using factor analysis and multiple hierarchical linear regressions. The results show that of all the values proposed by Schwartz, only the Self Transcendence is positively and significantly related with Authentic Leadership. No effects have been identified for moderation or interaction of the expression of leadership in relation to pairs of variables that represent Schwartz’s structure of values. Thus, the study suggests that the Self Transcendence, as a convergence of benevolence and universalism, is the main predictor of the authenticity of a leader, being enhanced to the extent that the leader experience of coordinating increases and he or she advances in age and lifetime.
