Resumo: The aim of this dissertation is to investigate how secondary school students in Rio signify eãucation, school anã teaching, the historical matrices that mould their significations, the forms of subjection they bring forth and the possibilities of resignification, either for education or the subject, they disclose. The tracking out of the significations above was guided by a concern wi th the matter of participation, here understood (utopianly, for sure) as the organizing principIe of every and any social relation. If in Brazil the people were excluded (by power and knowledge) from the polis, public education, then, conformed to a role that made it more disciplinary and less engaging, more repetitive and less creative. The recently-passed Law of Education (LOB) , however, in accordance with the Consti tution, has determined the management of school affairs through councils where teachers, students and parents take part together. Education, thus, must ponder about its social function in order to avoid falling prisioner to democratic formalism and so, once more, doom the 'excluded' to subjection and silence.
