Resumo: Objective: This work aims to analyze how the editorial boards act in scientific journals in Administration and related areas. In particular, this dissertation analyzes whether and how decoupling between espoused policies and practices adopted by the journals in relation to the two councils, that of editorial policies and the scientific editorial council occurs. The research that gives rise to this dissertation confirms, that journals are under institutional pressure to decouple espoused form implement policies with regards to how editorial councils operate. Method: The method chosen was qualitative and exploratory, complemented by some quantitative analyzes. The multiple case study is adequate to what the research endeavored to investigate, because it is a contemporary phenomenon, in which the limit between object of analysis and its context is blurred. Complementation with quantitative analyzes is justified because it allows triangulation of methods. The research is explanatory due to its purpose of identifying the existence of how decoupling occurs in editorial boards. It is classified as a field research based of interviews with editors and members of editorial boards. This work is based on two propositions: a) The choice of members of the editorial committee of national journals is prone to acting merely or partially ceremonially; b) The choice of the members of the editorial committee of national journals, although prone to acting merely or partially ceremonially, varies in relation to the stratum of the journal, and is dependent on relationships with the editor, or on members with a hierarchical reputation. Originality / Relevance: The role of editorial boards is recognized as of great relevance to the quality of publications and the editorial processes of a scientific journal. Yet, its influence on scientific journals has not been sufficiently explored by Management academics as a topic of scientific research. Social / management contributions. Decoupling has potentially quite negative effects for organizations and the field they comprise, especially when a significant part of the organizations that make up this field adopt opacity collectively. From a managerial and social point of view, the research contributes to a better knowledge of decoupling and to its eventuais overcoming. Theoretical contribution: From a theoretical point of view, the research allows the refinement and expansion of the conceptual domain in which the phenomenon has already been studied.
