Resumo: | The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and neurotoxic effects induced by the epidural or intrathecal injection of racemic ketamine or S-ketamine, with the preservative benzethonium chloride, in rabbits instrumented chronically with epidural and intrathecal catheters. It were used 48 rabbits allocated in six groups that received isotonic saline 0,9%, racemic ketamine; or S-ketamine, with preservative, by epidural or intrathecal route. There were no clinical differences between groups that received ketamine or S-ketamine. The rabbits in epidural groups showed ataxia of the hindlimbs, and animals receiving intrathecal injections showed motor block of the hindlimbs. No differences were observed in the neurological evaluation between groups. The racemic ketamine or S-ketamine, with the preservative benzetonium chloride, did not induce lesions in nervous tissue that may be associated with neurotoxicity or clinical changes. Apparently, the lesions in nervous tissue were caused possibly by the epidural or intrathecal catheters and were mild and potentially reversible. |
