Resumo: | In broad terms, this research aims at assessing the relationship between the degree of ambidexterity and competitiveness in Private Higher Education Institutions called IES in Portuguese, belonging to Kroton Education S.A. The theoretical framework is based on two constructs, the first one on the study of competitiveness through strategic management of resources using VRIO model as proposed by Barney; Herterly (2011), and the second one showing ambidexterity defined as an organizational competence in orchestrating and simultaneously generating and managing radical innovation projects (exploration) and incremental ones (exploitation) as per March (1991) and Tuschman & O’Reilly III (2004). In justification for this research, besides highlighting its theoretical originality, it generated important managerial information for the board of advisors of the largest higher education company in the world. The research methodology was divided into two stages, quantitative and qualitative. In the quantitative phase a questionnaire was sent to IES principals (when colleges) and deans (when university centers or universities), all IES belonging to the company. Therefore, the analyzed sample was 79 IES and descriptive statistics was used to assess the data, as well as cluster analysis, correlation analysis, ANOVA and Structural Equation Modeling – SEM. Having the data from quantitative stage, the qualitative phase was started, the president of SINEPE-PR was interviewed, the Union that represents employees of Private Education Companies based in Curitiba, state of Parana, Brazil. The main contributions from this research have been the design and validation of a measuring scale to size up the degree of competitiveness of IES based on VRIO model, the proposition that a maturity level exists in the degree of ambidexterity and the proof that there is a strong and positive relationship between the degree of ambidexterity and competitiveness among the assessed IES (r=0,70, p Value < 0,05). Finally, the main hypothesis has been confirmed, the higher was the degree of ambidexterity in an f IES, the higher was its degree of competitiveness (Value F 9,90 and Sig < 0,005). The number of IES participating in this research is highlighted as a limitation, making it harder to carry out more complex SEM. It is an orientation for further research to investigate the relationship and cause-effect analysis in the constructs in a set of performance variables in IES that are public, private without participation from BM&F, and private with participation from BM&F. |
