Resumo: Tobacco use and its adverse consequences is an issue of global concern, given the number of existing users and their impact on quality of life, especially among young people. The aim was to study the behavior of students in relation to tobacco use, in order to support actions that promote health. A quantitative descriptive study, with 50 students smoked a University Center of a municipality in Minas Gerais in 2013. All participants were informed and signed an informed consent form. The instruments for data collection were Criterion Economy Brazil (OSCC) of the Brazilian Association of Research Companies (ABEP) 2012 version, and the Test of Nicotine Dependence Fargerström, accompanied by gender and age. The results showed prevalence of 3.5% of college smokers, male predominance (76%), aged 30 years and over (50%), belonging to economy class B (74%), low nicotine dependence (65 %). %). It is concluded that the low dependence of the sample favors interventions simplest level, as a Cognitive-Behavioral approach, can be held in the university environment. It is hoped that the results presented in this study may contribute to the development of specific strategies and actions that aim to improve the health and quality of life in university environments, with regard to smoking.
