Resumo: The objective of this work was to understand the behavior of university students in relation to consumption of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, with views to subsidise actions promoting health in the university environment. It is a descriptive study, with 70 university students from a municipality of Minas Gerais, in the period 2012/2013. Tests were used for the Identification of Problems Related to the Use of Alcohol (AUDIT), Sorting of Involvement with Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Substances (ASSIST) and the Economic Classification of the ABEP. The results indicated predominance of university between 18 and 21 years of age (44,29%), female (62.86%), and belonging to classes B2 (30 %) and C1 (25.7 % ). The sample was classified as user of low risk for alcoholic beverages (62.9%), followed by users of risk (30%), being the alcoholic drink the substance mentioned in three levels of risk of the instrument. They were classified as users of low risk and moderate for the tobacco derivatives; marijuana and stimulants. But for the hypnotics/ sedatives, cocaine/crack users they were classified as moderate risk. Although has predominated the low risk, small number was classified in risk and even harmful use, a fact that deserves attention. We realize the importance of the development of educational programs with the students that alert him to respect the limits of consumption and the associated problems. The problems related to the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs are complex and multifactorial, and should be considered in the context of social life, their representations and consequences for quality of life. We realize the need for more studies that involve the promotion of health, the university environment and the problem of the use of alcohol and other drugs, including that within the university environment it is possible to introduce mechanisms that reduce the situations of vulnerability, stimulate the empowerment and enable new ways of living in collectivity.
