Resumo: | This study aims to identify the meanings of work on expatriate experience. The originality of our research lies in looking at the construct of meanings of work, in the context of international mobility and through critical lens, from the point of view of Brazilian executives. We also discuss the expatriation process, pointing out the glamourized form international mobility is treated and portrayed by mainstream literature, i.e. as a natural, unproblematic, and inevitable process, and revealing its contradictions. Data were obtained through oral testimonies given in semi-structured interviews, inspired by the oral history method. The reports were developed from individual memories of people wo experienced these situations. We highlight he narrative that reveals the construction of an intersubjective sense, given by the life trajectory of the subjects interviewed, and their relationship with peers, superiors, relatives, and friends. As a method of analysis, we adopted Discourse Analysis. Our main results can be identified by three categories that reveal the meanings of expatriation for Brazilian executives, e.g. expatriation as professional and social rise, expatriation as a challenge and prize for elected people, and expatriation as a sacrifice for one's family and personal life. Finally, the analysis of the trajectories of four Brazilian executives who lived the experience of expatriation identified a complex process of construction of meanings of expatriate work, involving multiple dimensions, most of which are not observed in mainstream organizational studies literature, specifically that dealing with international mobility. |
