Resumo: Human immunodeficiencv virus (HIV) and hapatitis C virus (HCV) co-infection occurs in a significant number of cases, and can be explained bv transmission routes common to these viruses. Such as sexual contact. exposure to contaminadet blood. and vertical transmission. HIV/HCV co-infection accelerates the progression to AIDS and liver fibrosis in patients winth chronic hepatitis C. worsening the prognosis and clinicalcondition of both viral diseases. Objective : To identifv the risk factors associated with HCV co-infection in HIV-infected patients treated at the municipal public health service in three cities in southern santa Catarina. Methods: a paired case-control studv that included HIV- infected adults (controls) and co-infected with HCV (cases) bv using intentional (convenience) sampling was performed. individuals who agreed to participate bv consent underwent and interview in a private room. Medical records were reviewed to collect clinical and laboratorv data. Chi-square test was used to compare categorical variables and student test or Wilcoxon U-Mann-Whitnev test was used to compare continuous variables. Odds ratiosn (OR) werw calculated to determine the association between variables. and confidence intervals werw set at 95%. Variables with p<0.20 were included in the multivariate analvsis: variables with p<0.05 and/or those that werw significant in the adiustment model remained in the final model. Results: We studied 165 patients: 55 cases and 110 controls. Mean age was 43.6_+ 8.4 vears: 70,9% male. Living with or had lived with hapatitis C carrier had been arrested. tattooing. iniection drug use. blood transfusion and having iniection drug users (IDUs) as sexual partners were considered risk factors for HIV/HCV co-infection. After adiusting for confounding variables. living or had lived with HCV carrier [OR=22.9 (3.37 to 156.71)] blood transfusion [OR= 15.93(2.55 to 99.46)]. IDUs [OR= 14.65 (1.42 to 151.59)] and having IDUs as sexual partners [OR= 6.97(1.21 to 40.32)] werw independent risk factors for HCV infection in HIV-infected patients. Conclusion: the risk factors associeted with HIV/HCV co-infection werw living with HCV carriers. blood transfusion. IDUs and having IDUs as sexual partners.
