Summary: | PlantaCiência is a scientific dissemination and university outreach project linked to the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), coordinated by Prof. Leopoldo C. Baratto. The project has social media channels, mainly Instagram and Facebook (@plantaciencia), totaling more than 25,000 followers, where it produces content about the plant kingdom in different formats. In addition, the project has a website (www.plantaciencia.com) with content for students, teachers and those interested in the world of plants. At the same time, we participate in and organize science fairs at state schools in Rio de Janeiro, bringing simple scientific experiments showing the stages of transforming a plant into a herbal medicine. This booklet is a product generated as part of the SBPC Goes to School Call 2021, promoted by the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) to stimulate scientific actions in public schools. The second year high school students (Entrepreneurship Class 2001 (Integral)) from Colégio Estadual Cortume Carioca, in Guapimirim, RJ, coordinated by Biology teacher Phelipe Martins da Silva, carried out part of the research into the medicinal plant species found in the Serra dos Órgãos National Park (PARNASO). The species included in this booklet were selected from the park's floristic survey and from the list of flora species recorded in PARNASO's Management Plan. In addition to the booklet, the students designed and researched the information that made up a card game called Baralho dos Cientistas (Scientists' Deck). The Science Fair at Colégio Estadual Cortume Carioca was held on June 7, 8 and 9, 2022, and PlantaCiência took part in a practical workshop in the school's Science Laboratory. On November 18, the project ended with the delivery of glassware, reagents and laboratory materials to improve the use of the space and enable more practical classes. The PlantaCiência team would like to thank the principals and teachers of the Colégio Estadual Cortume Carioca for welcoming our project and especially the students who took an active part in the science fair and the preparation of the teaching materials. |
