The municipality of Agudo in the state of Rio Grande do Sul is affected by recurrent floods and suffers from their consequences. Like so many other Brazilian municipalities, the urban drainage network was designed without considering the local characteristics of the area, such as accelerated surface runoff due to the location of the city being close to the foot of hills and mounds, associating this factor with channeled sections with limited dimensions, overflow of the body of water occurs. In order to mitigate these events, a technical feasibility study was prepared for the implementation of a reservoir for flood control in the municipality. Three possible locations for the reservoir were analyzed. To determine the maximum flow produced in the hydrographic basin, that is, the reservoir inlet flow, the convolution of the effective rainfall hyetogram and the Triangular Unit Hydrograph of the SCS was carried out. Damping of the flood wave was carried out using the Puls method. The results obtained through the simulation were compared, such as storage volume, required depth, available area for implantation and output hydrograph. It was possible to discard some solutions and propose new necessary studies, thus providing subsidies for the decision-making of the responsible municipal public body.
